For this project i was able to contribute both conceptually and materially .
The idea of a colour based work originally came out of my and my partners first task for the unit, which was to spend a day doing something different to our usual routine. We decided to spend the day wearing only one colour of clothing, and then meet up later to talk about any observations we had made on how this had impacted our day. WE were both surprised to find that despite ourselves being very aware of our one colour outfits, very few people had taken any notice, and those who had spoken to us had not thought to ask us about our choice of clothing.
From this point we discussed the idea of colour as identity and the conceptual connotations of different colours in impacting the judgement of others.
For the next two weeks i was unable to attend sessions due to work , however, the idea of colour and identity being a key part of the final production was taken on board by the group and was soon developed into the idea of a performative space in which people would be invited to interact with different colours.
We decided as a group to create a space divided into different coloured sections, and in each section have a person promoting the perceived virtues of their own colour. As well as the immediate visual presence of colour, we eventually decided to add in music and different props to be interacted with, as well as the idea of physically imparting colour onto the viewer, to create an immersive kaleidoscopic experience,
My role once the idea was finalized was to help with the construction of the space and to obtain the needed materials, such as boiler suits, paints, tools, chalks, paper tarp ect, to ensure we could achieve maximum audience interaction without damaging either the clothes of the viewer or the university facilities.
During the performance itself i took on the roll of usher, letting small groups into the performance and ensuring they had on the needed coverings to protect their clothing, and then upon their leaving asking them to fill out a small questionnaire about their experiences.
Once the performance was over ,we took the boiler suits that peole had been wearing and displayed them as an end of show installation, to show ff the variety of colours each once was now covered in after having been worn several times.
